Geoff’s Article

Here’s the full story of the Preview Evening from our Press Officer Geoff Abbott:

“A group of artists are helping to boost the careers of fourteen art graduates by giving them the key to their gallery.

The innovative move by Oriel Scala in Prestatyn is believed to be the first of its kind where graduates can organise and staff an exhibition, and sell their own work.

On Wednesday the graduates from Coleg Llandrillo and Glyndwr University opened the exhibition with one of the most “diverse” collections of art in Wales.

The tiny gallery next to the High Street’s Scala Cinema opened last December and has already sold thousands of pounds’ worth of contemporary and classic art.

Though small, the space is carefully managed by an artists’ cooperative and contains everything from ceramics and jewellery to fine-art and photography.

Speaking at the event’s opening night celebrated artist Sonja Benskin Mesher described the running of the exhibition as “really professional and really slick”.

“It seems to me that the north coast is becoming a high class art trail thanks to these artists’ cooperatives and the established galleries,” said Sonja who has her own studio in Llanelltyd near Dolgellau.

“The move to showing graduates work is innovative and helpful, and means that the public are seeing new work freshly emerged which is also supportive of the new talent,” she said.

Some of that new talent is Chad J Cooper, 23, from Penrhyn Bay, who graduated from Coleg Llandrillo with a foundation degree in art and design.

Chad helped to design the exhibition which will be open throughout August but struggled when it came to putting a price on his work.

“I’ve never priced a piece before and one of the artists has given me some pointers and I’ve based it (the price) on the time taken and the materials used,” said Chad who has two paintings in the exhibition.

Almost everyone at the opening could not resist touching the beautifully crafted felt rings in the centre of the gallery.

The “funky” felt is the work of Karis Tomlins, 22, from Chester, who graduated from Glyndwr University with a BA in applied arts.

“I was surprised when I saw Oriel Scala and I wasn’t expecting the space to be so welcoming and cosy,” said Karis.

“I think the gallery will do really well and has already had a great start and it’s great that they intend to help young artists who are just starting out,” she said.

The gallery is open from 10am to 5pm Monday to Saturday and the work of the artists can be seen at  www.orielsala.co.uk

Sonja Benskin Mesher RCA

We have to say a massive Thank You to Sonja Benskin Mesher for travelling quite a distance to speak at the Preview Evening, her speech was incredibly inspirational, and she has been busy blogging about her visit throughout the day, for which we are extremely grateful:

“Oriel Scala. My impressions as an artist.

My first impression of the Oriel Scala came when I first met Badge and Susi, and their freshness and enthusiasm for art was overwhelming and exciting. They had travelled over to Machylleth to visit MOMA, a long road trip.

On researching the venue, I have been impressed by the professional attitude, the stylish website and face book presence.

This is an active group whose work has been exposed in the press and the media, some members achieving national awards.

An artist led venue can work very well as already proven in Rhyl, and St Dogmael’s etc.

It seems to me that this North Coast is becoming a high class art trail, thanks to these artists’ cooperatives and the established Galleries.

The move to showing graduates work is innovative, and helpful. It means that the public are seeing new work, freshly emerged, and it is also supportive of the new talent.

Those leaving University are not only leaving behind the establishment, but also their support system, the daily structure, their studio space and more. This for them is a springboard for their art practices, and a new network of support.

I feel that it is very important for art workers to have a network of friends and colleagues that are objective, and honest. It can be a lone life in the studio, and I hope the artists here take advantage of new colleagues

I was lucky enough to see the Glyndwr end of year exhibition and was shown around by both students and lecturers. The quality of work was very high, and interesting, and it was hard to pull my self away. The work has remained in mind, and it is good to revisit it here at Oriel Scala as I was unable to return to Regent Street for a second look.

For some artists here this is a continuation of their career, for others the beginning.

Remember that each step you take is important, however small. Each success is to cherish, each failure, another step in your education. Learn from it all, and enjoy it.

A doctor once asked me who had painted the pictures in the hospital. I told him I had. He replied ‘What a beautiful thing to be doing’.

And so it is.

There are difficulties, and setbacks, as there are in life. Think of it as a ladder. Each step at a time, slip back, never mind, keep going.

Be true to yourselves and your message will come across. Of course their will be those who do not see the value in your work, but there will also be those that like it. You cannot please everyone.

We all have a different route to take, and it seems there is room for all of us here, without our paths colliding!

We are all in this together, so let us help each other!

This Gallery is a testament to all those that started it, run it, and show here. The standard is high, worthy of any big city.

Thank you for inviting me to come, and be a part of it.

I wish you all every success.”

Sonja Benskin Mesher.

Mini Review…

Susie Liddle, one of our resident members and Co-organizer of the Preview Evening wrote this wonderfully mini write up of last nights events:

“Oh wow….the Preview at Oriel Scala last night went really well.. Badge, Megs and me have worked really really hard to organise and make it happen….oh and not forgetting Wayne Clark who has also worked his little cotton socks off. Our first speaker Martin Barlow of Oriel Mostyn got snarled up in traffic on the M56 and couldn’t get there but Sonja Benskin-Mescher and John Bellis were there and both gave lovely speeches and finally we got the graduates up to the microphone (somewhat reluctantly) .. It was just how we had envisaged it…warm welcoming and not too formal. To all those who came and made it such a success, a big thank you. To those who couldn’t get there last night then please come and see the exhibition sometime during August. It runs to the end of the month but don’t leave it too long because we sell off the wall and the work is so good it might all be gone. It really is well worth seeing as this exhibition the Scala artists have invited 14 recent graduates from Glyndwr University and Coleg Llandrillo to show alongside the professionals. They are not only showing their work but have helped curate and hang the show. They will also take turns manning the gallery and joining in everything that is going on during their time as our guests. Oriel Scala is always an exciting place with great art on show but with these exciting new artists there too it’s positively buzzing.”
